Margaret Coen Collection

Margaret Coen, artistMargaret Coen (1909 - 1993) was an Australian artist best known for her watercolurs, paintings of flowers and still life works. She was born in rural Yass, NSW but educated and later lived in Sydney.  Coen came to prominence in the 1930s when she also met the successful artist Norman Lindsay who became her friend and mentor.  Lindsay was nearly 30 years her senior, twice married and with children of Margaret's age. Yet in more recent years, in a biography of the artist by her daughter, Meg Stewart,  it was disclosed that Coen and Lindsay were also lovers. However their affair was resolved the fact is that Lindsay and Coen and indeed Coen's poet husband, Douglas Stewart, all remained close friends for the rest of Lindsay's long life.
