About the artist and this card range -
Maringka Burton was born in 1948 in Wingellina, Western Australia. She grew up in Ernabella, where she learnt to sing in Amata and do Inma (dancing.) Maringka works in a variety of media, making baskets, weavings, linocuts, paintings, punu (wooden animals) and piti (wooden artefacts). In her paintings, Maringka uses a traditional, muted palette and fine dotting technique to depict Tjukurrpa (dreaming) and tjukula (rock holes) and bush tucker animals.
Maringka was the first female artist at Iwantja Arts, where she is now a senior lady, helping out at the centre.
Melbourne - based fashion accessories designer Catherine Manuell Design has supported this beautiful card range as part of a Women's Aboriginal Artists Project in association with Iwantja Arts. Royalties from sales of these cards directly benefit the artists and their community.
