The Art -
Before European settlement, the Canberra area was inhabited by Indigenous Australians, who spoke a Ngarigo dialect. European exploration began as early as the 1820s. As settlers took over the land many Aboriginal migrated to other local areas. The district’s transformations from NSW rural country came out of political debates in late 19th Century because of rivalry between Sydney and Melbourne as to which city was to be the nation's capital. Federal Capital Territory was created on 1 January 1911 (later named Australian Capital Territory). At midday on 12 March 1913, the city was officially given its name.
