The Artist -
William Saville-Kent (10, July 1845 – 11, October 1908) was born in Sidmouth, Devon in South West England. His childhood was overshadowed by a number of controversial events, including the murder of his half-brother which his sister confessed to five years after the event. Educated at King’s College London, he went on to various jobs at: the British Museum, the Brighton Aquarium and Manchester Aquarium. In 1884 he relocated to Australia and was offered the role of Inspector of Fisheries in TAS. Then in 1889 he became Commissioner of Fisheries for QLD; and 1892, Commissioner of Fisheries for WA. During this time he experimented with culturing pearls on Thursday Island. Modern day cultured pearls are the result of his work. His book on the The Great Barrier Reef – published in 1893, attracted worldwide attention and for decades was the definitive book on this landform. Saville-Kent was also a pioneer of the concept of sustainable fisheries.
