Who sends cards anymore? June 23, 2025 13:53

Do people still write and send mail? Yes they do!

Why bother?

Snail mail is definitely on the decline since the introduction and broad adoption of email and SMS.

Who has time to find a card, locate someone's address, write a note or letter and get to the post office to send it?

You may be surprised..

Writing a letter takes time to sit and think about what you have going on in your life, it can be very therapeutic. It gets you off your phone and reignites the creative skill of handwriting.

Covid

Covid kicked off a bit of a resurgence in handwritten mail, as we all had more time on our hands and felt the distance from loved ones more keenly.

When to send mail

I try to make the effort to send cards and gifts in the mail if I know I won't see someone around their special day. I do this in the hope that the recipient will enjoy getting something nice in the mail and I enjoy the process. Selecting and writing a card, wrapping a gift and taking it to the post office - what a lovely way to spend your time!

Penpal groups

During Covid I and many others joined Lovely Letters and I know there are other penpal or letter writing groups out there. It is a great way to meet people all over the country and the world and to fill your mailbox with wonderful handwritten, pretty mail.

Tips for letter writing

  • Letters are best written on gorgeous stationery or cards with a lovely pen.
  • A candle and a cup of tea or a G&T also help.
  • Keep a stack of cards and stamps so you have a card at hand for every occassion.
  • Use washi tape, colour pens, stickers and other creative ideas to decorate your envelopes. I make my own envelopes for letters out of old magazine pages.

Happy letter and card writing - let me know if you agree, or if you are a confirmed online communicator.
