Australian Impressionism Art Card - Arthur Streeton's Above Us the Great Grave Sky

The Artist -

Arthur Streeton (1867-1943) was a landscape painter and leading member of the Australian Impressionist movement also known as the Heidelberg School. This painting Above Us the Great Grave Sky (1890) was painted by Streeton during the last of two summers spent in the company of Charles Conder and Tom Roberts at the artists' camp Eaglemont, near Heidelberg. 

In the painting we see two figures, reclining on the grass, contemplating a rising moon. The title of the painting is taken from Adam Lindsay Gordon's 1867 poem, Doubtful dreams:

'From the spot where we last lay dreaming Together – yourself and I – The soft grass beneath us gleaming, Above us the great grave sky.'
