About -

Under the light of a full moon these bilbies emerge from their burrow in search of a meal ranging from insects, fungi, seeds, fruit and bulbs.

Often referred to as Australia’s version of the Easter Bunny, the Greater Bilby (Macrotis lagotis) is a ground-dwelling marsupial and is the only living member left in the Thylacomyinae bandicoot family. The Lesser Bilby (Macrotis leucura) is thought to have gone extinct in the 1950s.

Once inhabiting over 70% of the Australian continent, it now only dwells in about 15% in mostly arid zones where spinifex and tussock grasses abound. They get enough moisture from their food so are not reliant on large water sources to survive.

This specie’s conservation status is listed as ‘vulnerable’ — habitat destruction along with feral cats and foxes are adding to the threats that face them.
