The Artist -
Brett Whiteley was one of Australia’s most celebrated artists, renowned for his sensual, lyrical depictions of interiors, nudes, and harbour scenes across painting, sculpture, and graphic arts. He was a multiple winner of the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes.
Whiteley was born in Sydney and trained locally before gaining international recognition, spending a decade in Europe and time in New York and Fiji, where he mixed with cultural figures like Janis Joplin and Bob Dylan. On his return to Sydney, he produced highly sought-after, vividly coloured works influenced by Henri Matisse, achieved major successes in the 1970s including winning all three major Australian art prizes in 1978, and was later awarded the Order of Australia.
