The Art -

Hasui Kawase (1883-1957), a prominent Japanese printmaker, was a leading figure in the 20th-century shin-hanga “new prints” movement. With a love for scenes of snow, rain and mist, his emotive and atmospheric landscape woodblock prints captured Japan’s changing scenery with a Western-influenced style. Despite family pressure, he pursued art, studying watercolour and oil painting, which shaped his depictions of changing weather, often featuring serene, natural settings. Many of his early works were destroyed in the 1923 earthquake, making pre-earthquake prints rare and treasured.
